I recently returned from another trip to the wonderful Nantahala Mountains. My week headquartered in my mini camper outside Franklin, N.C., was magical, as my wife and I hiked the amazing area and I produced new work for my online gallery.
MTA (aka, My Trusty Assistant or my wife) and I stayed in the stunning Standing Indian Campground deep in the Nantahala National Forest. The campground is in the heart of some of the most amazing scenery the region has to offer.
Honestly, we didn't know what to expect this trip, since weather forecasts called for days of rain. However, we lucked out, with the rains holding off for seven days.
By the time the weather finally soured, we had already hiked and driven through many miles of the Nantahala Forest. And I had a dozen beautiful new pieces of work for the Nantahala Mountains Collection.
We also were fortunate enough to have my parent join us at the campground. The first day of the trip began with the four of us driving to the Tellico River across the mountains in Tennessee. However, as we drove I saw a sign that read "Conasauga Falls," a waterfall I had never heard about.
Without consulting the others in my truck, I turned off the highway and began a slow drive along a national forest service road, which at one point required my engaging four-wheel drive.
A 30-minute drive and 15-minute hike revealed Conasauga Falls, which is a real jewel. The final print was well worth the detour.
We spent the rest of the day touring the beautiful Tellico River, which I have worked on several occasions.
Over the next several days, I produced beautiful prints of sunrises, mountain overlooks, tumbling creeks and a couple of other waterfalls that have been added to the Nantahala Mountains Collection.
It was wonderful time spent in a gorgeous area. I can't wait to return.
