Cafe Du Monde was originally established in 1862 as a coffee stand in the New Orleans French Market. It remains a popular stop-off for coffee and beignets. The cafe is open 24 hours a day every day of the week, closing only on Christmas Day. The one exception to that rule came when it closed for two months due to the impacts of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Cafe Du Monde is a traditional coffee shop, with a limited menu consisting of dark-roasted coffee, chicory coffee, beignets, white and chocolate milk, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Coffee can be served black or as cafe au lait (which means the coffee is mixed hot milk). Beignets are a square French-style doughnut covered with powered sugar, and are the only remaining food item on the French Market.
