The sun has set, and the creatures of the night are the only sound you hear deep in the Louisiana swamps. The hooting of some owls, the splashing of predatory fish, but otherwise nothing stirs except a cool evening breeze through the Spanish moss.

This old hunting camp on Blind River south of Baton Rouge is a reminder of days when local hunters gathered and chased deer in the swamps near Gramercy, La. You can almost hear the laughter of the communal hunters as stories are told of the day's hunt. It makes you want to pull up a rocking chair and join the fun.
The now-abandoned camp is located way up the Blind River on what is now part of the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area, which encompasses thousands of acres of swamp stretching from near the Mississippi River at Gramercy, La., to Lake Maurepas just to the west of New Orleans.
