I love photographing old barns, so when I passed this Boxley Valley farm while working in the Buffalo National River area over the summer of 2020 I knew I needed to include it. Well, the opportunity came after I hiked in for a sunset that never materialized into anything usable. I stopped to shoot an abandoned homestead, and after packing up I checked my astro app to see if the Milky Way would be visible that night — and discovered it was already right on the horizon. I figured the mountains would make it difficult to really see the astrological marvel, so I headed back to my camper. But I pulled over to experiment after seeing hordes of fireflies in a field. While checking the back of my camera after a series of shots, I could clearly see the Milky Way stretched above. I quickly packed up and headed straight for the old barn. It was amazing! I worked quietly, since the barn's owner lives right across the road and set up my camera on a tripod so the Milky Way was taking up most of the sky. I exposed to capture the wonderful night sky, but that left the barn in complete darkness. So I used a small LED panel to light up the barn and fences, walked about 30 yards to the right of the camera and used a remote trigger to trip the shutter. This is NOT a composite photo: Instead, it is a single frame made possible by the use of the LED panel to create a balanced exposure.
Fireflies dance around a Boxley Valley barn as the Milky Way paints the night sky. Boxley Valley lies along the Buffalo River and continues to be farmed by many of decendants of the original settlers of the area. This photo is available for purchase a
