The New Orleans skyline at dusk lights up. The business district, defined by the skyscrapers is just part of the tourism hotspot, with the world-famous French Quarter located just to the east. St. Louis Cathedral, which anchors the Vieux Carre, can be seen on the right side of the image.

New Orleans was founded May 7, 1718, by the French Mississippi Company under the direction of Jean-Baptiste La Moyne Bienville. It was named after the Duke of Orleans, Phillipe d'Orleans, who was regent of France at that time. It was an important smuggling point for the budding American colonies during the American Revolution.
However, the city was ceded to Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The important commercial city remained under Spanish control until 1801, at which time it reverted to French control. Nearly all of the surviving 18th-century architecture of the Vieux Carr' (French Quarter) dates from this Spanish period.
The city was part of the Louisiana Purchase, during which France's Napoleon sold a massive amount of land to the United States in 1803.
It remains Louisiana's largest city, and is a vital commercial port for the state and the nation.
