"New Year Rising" was the result of a planned trip on New Year's Day 2021. I checked the weather forecast the day before and saw partly cloudy skies were expected, so I woke up at 4 a.m. on New Year's Day to drive to the stunning Henderson Swamp. About 20 minutes before official sunrise, I was bobbing around in my boat with perfect clouds stretching across the sky above. Normally I would set up a tripod (I have a 12-foot tripod if I need to work in deep water) and shoot a nice, slow shutter speed to smooth out the water, but that wasn't possible on this trip because of stiff winds. So I simply used a fast shutter speed to stop the motion of the branches and Spanish moss hanging from the trees. Using a wide-angle lens allowed me to includes several trees and really capture the stunning sky as the sun cast amazing light across the clouds.
