Palo Duro Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Texas, is a beautifully rugged system of canyons cut into the landscape. Palo Duro is now part of the Texas State Parks system and is the second largest canyon in the United States. It is 120 miles long and six miles wide (at its widest point). The canyon is the site of the final battle of the Red River War (1874-75), where Col. Ranald S. Mackenzie led the 4th U.S. Cavalry defeated the Plains Indians and forced them back to their reservations. Palo Duro Canyon then became part of the JA Ranch in 1876, and at its height was home to more than 100,000 head of cattle. The State of Texas bought the stunning canyon from the JA Ranch in 1933, and the Civilian Conservation Corps spent the next five years creating the state park. It opened to the public in 1934, even before it was completed. It is now the second largest park in Texas, encompassing 28,000 acres.
