The Atchafalaya Basin is one of the most amazing expanses of wilderness in the United States. Its winding bayous and Spanish moss-draped cypress trees are places of refuge from the modern world. It's a place where cell service is spotty, where the sound of highways is nonexistent, where alligators and birds call. And Grand Lake is right in the geographic center of this wonderland. I was running my boat through this picturesque lake in November 2019 when I saw this cool cypress tree standing alone. Its leaves had turned golden for the autumn, and the moss was blowing in the breeze. I immediately thought about how this one tree encapsulated the beauty of the swamp, the spirit of this wild region of the state.
